Baseball Recap: Merrill Vandals vs. New Lothrop Hornets

Merrill had lost three straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped down to 6-7 to make it four. They lost 10-1 to the New Lothrop Hornets. The Vandals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Hornets apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2025.

As for New Lothrop, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-14. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won nine matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

For New Lothrop's part, Stone Wineman tossed a big game, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Wineman has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in ten consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Nathan Kuchar was incredible, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. New Lothrop is 4-1 when Kuchar posts two or more runs, but 11-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Baldwin, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.

Coincidentally, Merrill and New Lothrop will both be playing Fowler the next time they take the field. The Vandals will host the Eagles at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the Hornets will play them later in the day, at 2:00 p.m.
