Recap: Lake Balboa College Prep Cougars vs. University Pathways Medical Magnet
This season hasn't been kind to the Lake Balboa College Prep Cougars, who are still winless after their fifth contest. They took a 32-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of University Pathways Medical Magnet on Thursday. Lake Balboa College Prep was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as University Pathways Medical Magnet apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2020.
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was CELINE ASSIO, who scored nine points along with ten rebounds. ASSIO scored a full 42.9% of Lake Balboa College Prep's points, the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. YARETZY HERNANDEZ was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, Lake Balboa College Prep were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Gianna Benitez was the offensive standout of the contest as she dropped a double-double on 12 points and 18 rebounds. She also grabbed two+ steals for the first time this season. Another player making a difference was Mia Munguia, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Lake Balboa College Prep's loss was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-5. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 19.6 points per game. As for University Pathways Medical Magnet, their win ended a eight-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-6.
Lake Balboa College Prep will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Discovery at 3:45 p.m. on January 10, 2024. University Pathways Medical Magnet's road trip will continue as they head out to face Venice at 10:00 a.m. on December 20th.
