Basketball Recap: Canyon's Higher State Rank on Full Display on Saturday

After losing to Highland the last time they met, Canyon decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Canyon Cowboys walked away with a 58-51 victory over the Highland Bulldogs on Saturday. Given the Cowboys' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 190th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 416th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Shannen Wilson was her usual excellent self, going 11 for 19 on her way to 25 points and seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Lanie Rafkind, who posted ten points.

Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive rebound total in four consecutive games.

Canyon's win bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Highland, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-7.

Canyon will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Rio Mesa at 11:30 a.m. on December 26th. Canyon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.3 points per game this season. Highland will take on Antelope Valley in a holiday battle at at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Antelope Valley will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something Highland surely won't give up without a fight.
