Softball Recap: Putnam County Triumphs

Putnam County hadn't done well against Trenton recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Midgets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs. Surprisingly, this marked the Midgets' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Rory Gilworth spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up 17 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Putnam County's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Reagan Smith, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one double. Those two hits gave Smith a new career-high.

Putnam County's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-8. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for Trenton, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-5.

Putnam County and Trenton could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Missouri Rankings. The Midgets (ranked 168th) will meet South Harrison (ranked 42nd) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Trenton will square off against Albany at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank disadvantage (117 vs. 35).
