Basketball Recap: South El Monte Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Brianna Mendoza and Justine Lucero

South El Monte lost against Gabrielino last Tuesday and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The South El Monte Eagles came up short against the Gabrielino Eagles, falling 62-41. South El Monte has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Justine Lucero and Brianna Mendoza certainly did their best on Monday to avoid the loss. Lucero posted 20 points and three steals, while Mendoza had seven points and six steals. Lucero's evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Frida Lopez, who earned six points and three steals.

Leading Gabrielino to victory were Shannon Yan and Ava Yamashita. Yan scored 23 points and five boards, while Yamashita put up 18 points and four steals. The dominant performance gave Yamashita a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Riley Yamaguchi, who posted eight points along with five rebounds and four steals.

South El Monte's defeat dropped their record down to 9-13. As for Gabrielino, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 11-9.

South El Monte didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 49-10 victory against Mountain View on the 29th. As for Gabrielino, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 55-17 win against El Monte on the 29th.
