Basketball Recap: Mt. Carmel Starts off Right with Win over Del Norte

Mt. Carmel took care of business in their home opener on Saturday. They took down the Del Norte Nighthawks 55-37. The Sundevils pushed the score to 45-25 by the end of the third, a deficit the Nighthawks cut but never quite recovered from.

Ariana Gonzalez went supernova, almost dropping a triple-double with nine points, 13 boards, and ten steals. Those ten steals gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Mattea Castro, who posted 12 points and five rebounds.

Mt. Carmel smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive rebounds in 21 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Despite the loss, Del Norte still got an impressive performance from Emerson Cole, who went 6-for-14 to rack up 19 points along with five assists and three steals.

Mt. Carmel wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, an 82-32 defeat against La Costa Canyon on the 18th. As for Del Norte, they will be playing in front of their home fans against La Jolla at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
