Football Recap: Michael Sargent's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory over Archbishop Riordan

If Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory was riding high fresh off their 71-14 takedown of Bellarmine College Prep last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Fightin' Irish lost 56-30 to the Archbishop Riordan Crusaders on Friday. The Fightin' Irish were not able to make up for their loss to the Crusaders from their previous meeting back in September of 2024.

Several Fightin' Irish players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Michael Sargent, who threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns. Chase Jenkins was another key pass catcher, picking up 120 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.

Michael Mitchell Jr. continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Archbishop Riordan, throwing for 338 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 61 yards on only six carries. That's the most rushing yards Mitchell Jr. has posted since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Cynai Thomas, who picked up 98 receiving yards and three scores.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory's defeat dropped their record down to 3-2. As for Archbishop Riordan, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 5-0.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory will square off against Junipero Serra at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Archbishop Riordan, they will take on St. Ignatius College Preparatory at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Crusaders will be up against the Wildcats' rather soft defense (which has allowed 26.5 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
