The Shawnee Mission Northwest Cougars will be playing at home against the Lawrence Lions on Thursday. Shawnee Mission Northwest will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each game than the last.
Shawnee Mission Northwest and Shawnee Mission East faced off in a cross-town battle on Friday. The Cougars blew past the Lancers 48-21. The victory continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Lancers: they've now won six in a row.
It was another big night for Traimyre Woodruff, who rushed for 249 yards and three scores on only 15 carries. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Demetric Tyler, who rushed for 52 yards and one TD.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Shawnee Mission Northwest was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 367 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Shawnee Mission Northwest didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Daquan Smith, Tyler, and Max Rodriguez picked up one apiece. Smith also made nine total tackles, which is notable because Shawnee Mission Northwest is 4-1 when he posts at least four total tackles, but 1-2 otherwise. The Cougars got some further help from Jacob Stirling: he made 15 total tackles.
Lawrence's found some homefield redemption this week after a overtime loss to Shawnee Mission North on Friday. The Lions took down Lawrence Free State 24-6.
Lawrence found their leader in sophomore Joey Dooley, who rushed for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 7.1 yards per carry, and also threw for 51 yards and one TD. The Lions also got a significant boost from Ethan Curry, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 99 yards.
One reason for the win was Lawrence's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Josh Galbreath refused to say out of the backfield, picking up two sacks all by himself. He was another major factor on D, picking up two sacks, forcing one fumble, and making ten total tackles.
Shawnee Mission Northwest's record is now 5-3. As for Lawrence, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-7.
Shawnee Mission Northwest strolled past Lawrence when the teams last played on October 10th by a score of 26-7. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Lions have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
