Basketball Recap: California Takes a Loss

California won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune on Saturday. They were dealt a 59-31 loss at the hands of the Villa Park Spartans. While losing is never fun, the Condors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 409th, while the Spartans are ranked 79th).

Bailey Roczey was her usual excellent self, putting up 13 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals for Villa Park. Roczey is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed four or more in the last four games she's played. Madelyn Martinez was another key player, posting nine points and five rebounds.

California's defeat dropped their record down to 7-6. As for Villa Park, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. California will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Santa Fe at 6:30 p.m. on January 8, 2025. As for Villa Park, they will take on Yorba Linda at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
