Sam Houston had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against the Leesville Wampus Cats by a score of 44-35. The Broncos have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Wampus Cats, too.

E.J. Hanney had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 281 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.3 yards per carry. Those three rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Gavin Breaux was another key player, throwing for 170 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 80% of his passes.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Sam Houston was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 344 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 158 rushing yards in eight consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Several Wampus Cats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Grant Braxton, who rushed for 157 yards and three scores while picking up 7.9 yards per carry. The team also got some help courtesy of Trel Broom, who rushed for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Sam Houston didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 46-14 defeat against Teurlings Catholic on the 12th. As for Leesville, they have also already played their next game, a 56-20 loss against Tioga on the 12th.
