Basketball Recap: Center Sets Scoring Season-High Against Wheatland

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Center). They put the hurt on the Wheatland Pirates with a sharp 47-25 victory on Wednesday. The Cougars pushed the score to 45-16 by the end of the third, a deficit the Pirates cut but never quite recovered from.

Center's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kailee Coggins, who went 6 for 10 on her way to 12 points in addition to seven steals and five boards. Coggins has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Reniaya Applin, who posted 16 points in addition to seven rebounds and four blocks.

Center smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Wheatland lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Kimiko Cervantes, who had six points along with six boards and three steals. That's the most steals Cervantes has posted since back in January of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Reagan Clancy, who put up 13 points and three steals.

Center's victory ended a six-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-13. As for Wheatland, they dropped their record down to 0-10 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Center and Wheatland could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Center (ranked 1042nd) will meet Bear River (ranked 405th) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Wheatland (ranked 1220th) will meet Colfax (ranked 110th) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
