Basketball Recap: Scripps Ranch's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Tuesday

It was a good run, but Scripps Ranch unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 52-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Capitan Vaqueros. The Falcons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Vaqueros apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2021.

Clare Valentine and Katrina Purcell certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Valentine dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds, while Purcell almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine boards. The game was Valentine's seventh in a row with at least ten points. Ree Ree Davis was another key player, putting up seven points.

Even though they lost, Scripps Ranch smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

El Capitan's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Keira Heinricy, who posted 23 points. That's the most points Heinricy has posted since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Paige Worthem, who went 5 for 11 en route to 17 points and six rebounds.

Scripps Ranch's defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-6. As for El Capitan, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 20-4 record this season.

Scripps Ranch and El Capitan should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Scripps Ranch will square off against Mira Mesa at 6:00 p.m. on Friday up 301 places (217 vs. 518). Scripps Ranch is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road. Meanwhile, El Capitan (ranked 111th) will meet Helix (ranked 492nd) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Scripps Ranch is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.4 points per game this season.
