Sonora is 7-2 against Ozona since August of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Broncos will host the Lions at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Ozona will face off against a team with plenty of momentum: Sonora extended their winning streak to four on Friday. The Broncos took their contest with ease, bagging a 42-8 win over Forsan. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 20-0.
The critical scores for Sonora came from Wyatt Killough, Acea Gomez, Jayden Welborn, Angel Diaz, Armani Coronado, and Jose Guerra.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Sonora proved: they limited Forsan to a paltry 3.4 yards per carry. The team can thank Coronado for the heroic effort on defense: he. Sonora didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.5.
Sonora's defense didn't let Coy Evans, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. Forsan's QB won't forget Gomez anytime soon given he sacked him twice.
Meanwhile, you're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter and that's exactly how it played out for Ozona on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Reagan County out of the water with a 94-16 final score. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Lions had established a 65-point advantage.
Sonora better keep an eye on Christian Villarreal. He was instrumental in Ozona's win, rushing for 296 yards and six scores while picking up 18.5 yards per carry, and also picking up 45 receiving yards and one touchdown. Villarreal really tore up the turf during one magnificent 72-yard run. Another player making a difference was Michael Preddy, who threw for 180 yards and three TDs on only nine passes.
Ozona didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Valentino Castillo, Jp Garza, and Andon Glosson picked up one apiece. Garza got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Sonora's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Ozona, their win bumped their record up to 6-0.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Sonora has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 197.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Ozona struggles in that department as they've been averaging 481.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Sonora suffered a grim 30-6 defeat to Ozona in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. Thankfully for the Broncos, Hudson Fowler (who threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
