Basketball Recap: Westview Wolverines vs. Mission Hills Grizzlies

After flying high against Del Norte last Tuesday, Westview came back down to earth. The Westview Wolverines were just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 62-61 to the Mission Hills Grizzlies. The Wolverines were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Grizzlies earlier this season, when they won 54-53.

Westview's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mia Jacobson, who almost dropped a double-double with 16 points and nine boards. Jacobson's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least 16 points. Another player making a difference was Maren Zimmer, who went 9-for-14 to rack up 21 points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Westview was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mission Hills only racked up seven assists.

Mission Hills' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Maleena Nava, who went 8-for-17 en route to 22 points in addition to five assists and three steals. Nava is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as she's posted one of at least 47% in the last three games she's played. Bay Cordova was another key player, going 6-for-14 on her way to 17 points along with three steals and three blocks.

Westview's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 17-8. As for Mission Hills, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-8 record this season.

Westview wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 77-22 win against Fallbrook on the 11th. As for Mission Hills, they have also already played their next game, a 91-22 victory against Del Norte on the 11th.
