Recap: Downey Vikings vs. Villa Park Spartans
The Downey Vikings waltzed into Saturday's match with four straight wins but they left with five. Everything went their way against Villa Park as Downey made off with a 52-28 victory. Given Downey's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 154th, while Villa Park is ranked 420th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Among those leading the charge was Amanda Velazquez, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 20 rebounds. Symantha Barnett was another key contributor, scoring 5 points along with 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
Bailey Roczey and Marley Rommel certainly did their best on Saturday to try and avoid the loss. Roczey scored 5 points along with 7 assists, while Rommel scored 9 points.
Downey's win bumped their record up to 8-3. As for Villa Park, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Downey will take on St. Anthony at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. St. Anthony is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. As for Villa Park, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Northview at 6:00 p.m.
