Softball Recap: North Platte Wins Going Away Against Gering

North Platte came out on top against Gering on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fifth inning. North Platte blew past Gering 10-2. North Platte might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by six runs or more this season.

Tiffany Townsend and Katie Titus made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Townsend struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Titus tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Townsend has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Townsend went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs, while Titus went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those five RBI gave Townsend a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lauren Bowers, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Stella Muzzey also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

North Platte hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gering struck out nine times.

North Platte is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-11 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Gering, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 14-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. North Platte will take on McCook on Tuesday. The Bison have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.16 runs per game on average), something the Bulldogs will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Gering, they will face off against Chadron on Tuesday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cardinals have averaged an impressive 9.6 runs per game this season.
