Football Recap: Mount Zion Christian Academy Comes Up Short on the Road Against Covenant Day

Mount Zion Christian Academy had to start their season on the road on Saturday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They fell 39-26 to the Covenant Day Lions. The Mighty Warriors gained 104 more yards on the day, but it was the Lions that made the best use of them.

Despite the loss, Mount Zion Christian Academy still got an impressive performance from Sherrad Bennard III, who rushed for 130 yards and one TD on only 13 carries, and also threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes.

While Mount Zion Christian Academy came up short, they sure didn't make it easy for Covenant Day: they limited their QB to completion percentage of just 47.8%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from three players: Lashaude McElvine, Rashon Ashford, and Jahshua Fishe, who each logged two passes deflected. Mount Zion Christian Academy wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 57.9%.

Mount Zion Christian Academy's defensive line also made the game a nightmare for the opposing QB, racking up seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Lawrence Muldrow Jr and Zachary Mason, who racked up six sacks between them.

Covenant Day got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Michael Banke out in front who rushed for 76 yards and a pair of scores. Those 76 rushing yards gave Banke a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sidnee Westbrook Jr., who rushed for 86 yards and one TD.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mount Zion Christian Academy will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Northern Durham at 7:00 p.m. on September 5. As for Covenant Day, they are packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will take on Cannon [Cannon/Concord Academy] at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
