Basketball Game Preview: La Costa Canyon Mavericks vs. Oceanside Pirates

The La Costa Canyon Mavericks will head out on the road to face off against the Oceanside Pirates at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

La Costa Canyon is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since November 19, 2024 on Friday. They came up short against Torrey Pines, falling 50-25. Having soared to a lofty 56 points in the game before, the Mavericks couldn't push the score so high this time.

Meanwhile, Oceanside came up short against Carlsbad on Friday and fell 53-40. The Pirates have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

La Costa Canyon will need focus on slowing down Alana Hoskins, one of several Oceanside players who made an impact when they last played. She posted nine points in addition to eight steals and six assists. Another player making a difference was Aliyah Samad, who scored ten points and eight boards.

Even though they lost, Oceanside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 15 consecutive matchups.

La Costa Canyon's record is now 11-11. As for Oceanside, they now have a losing record at 9-10.

La Costa Canyon came up short against Oceanside when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 45-38. Can La Costa Canyon avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
