Preview: Westview Wolverines vs. Bonita Vista Barons

The Westview Wolverines are on the road again on Friday and plays the Bonita Vista Barons at 7:00 p.m. on February 16th. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Del Norte typically has all the answers at home, but on Friday Westview proved too difficult a challenge. They snuck past the Nighthawks with a 52-48 win.

Sydney Heyn and Sarah Heyn were among the main playmakers for Westview as the former scored 18 points along with five rebounds and the latter dropped a double-double on ten points and ten assists. Heyn is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 15 or more in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Maren Zimmer, who scored nine points.

Meanwhile, Bonita Vista beat Mater Dei Catholic 56-43 on Friday. Given Bonita Vista's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 148th, while Mater Dei Catholic is ranked 469th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mahliya Wilson was her usual excellent self, scoring 25 points along with seven rebounds. She hasn't dropped below 19 points for seven straight games. Haydee Arancibia-hardwick was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with nine rebounds and two blocks.

Westview is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a massive bump to their 18-10 record this season. As for Bonita Vista, they pushed their record up to 14-12 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Westview have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Bonita Vista struggles in that department as they've been averaging 32.4 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Westview didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Bonita Vista when the teams last played back in December of 2022, but they still walked away with a 60-54 victory. Does Westview have another victory up their sleeve, or will Bonita Vista turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
