Baseball Recap: St. Augustine Triumphs

St. Augustine won the last time they faced Coronado and things went their way on Friday too. The Saints sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Islanders. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Saints.

Jonny Haskett spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 15 Ks. He is becoming a predictor of St. Augustine's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 8-17 when he doesn't).

At the plate, St. Augustine saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mario Vitale, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

St. Augustine's win bumped their record up to 11-17. As for Coronado, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 12 of their last 14 matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-21 record this season.

St. Augustine and Coronado are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Saints will welcome San Ysidro at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Coronado, they will head out to face off against La Jolla Country Day at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
