Baseball Recap: Lakeside Comes Up Short

Lakeside had lost eight straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 4-14 to make it nine. They came up short against the Canfield Cardinals, falling 19-0. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Dragons of the 8-1 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2019.

As for Canfield, they have been performing well recently as they've won 14 of their last 17 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games.

For Canfield's part, Joey Gabriel and Anthony Groner were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Gabriel tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Groner struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Gabriel has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. At the plate, Gabriel went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI, while Groner got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs and two RBI. That's the most hits Gabriel has posted since back in May of 2025.

In other batting news, Canfield got a massive performance out of Logan Patellis, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Those three RBI gave Patellis a new career-high. Jackson Johnson was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

Lakeside does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Canfield, they will square off against South Range at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Raiders' pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so the Cardinals' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
