Basketball Recap: Canyon Victorious

Canyon's tournament run continued when they took on Chandler on Saturday. The Canyon Cowboys pulled ahead with a 47-46 photo finish over the Chandler Wolves. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Cowboys' disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 216th in California, while the Wolves are ranked 65th in Arizona).

Canyon was led to victory by Darby Dunn and Shannen Wilson. Dunn went 7 for 11 on her way to 18 points in addition to eight steals and five assists, while Wilson went 7 of 9 en route to 18 points and three steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which Wilson has scored at least a third of Canyon's points.

Despite the loss, Chandler still got an impressive performance from Markayla Shirley, who posted 11 points. Shirley is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Karis Hurd, who put up eight points and four steals.

The win made it two in a row for Canyon and bumps their season record up to 8-6. As for Chandler, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-4.

Canyon and Rio Mesa will round out the year against one another at at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. After both having extra time off, Chandler and Gilbert will dust off their jerseys to face off against one another at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025. Chandler is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.1 points per game this season.
