Basketball Recap: Pilar Carrera's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Southwest SD over Kofa

Southwest SD saw some tournament action on Friday. They took a 47-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kofa Kings. While losing is never fun, the Raiders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 847th in California, while the Kings are ranked 234th in Arizona).

Southwest SD lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Pilar Carrera, who posted 17 points. Another player making a difference was Jazlyn Martinez, who earned eight points.

Amani Montiel went supernova for Kofa, going 7 of 16 on her way to 18 points along with eight steals and seven assists. That makes it four consecutive games in which Montiel has scored at least a third of Kofa's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison DeBoe, who had four points and three steals.

This is the second loss in a row for Southwest SD and nudges their season record down to 7-5. As for Kofa, with the win, they broke their eight-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-9.

Southwest SD has already played their next game, a 52-27 victory against Southwest EC on the 4th. As for Kofa, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 50-36 win against Pacific Ridge on the 4th.
