Baseball Game Preview: Calais Blue Devils vs. Woodland Dragons

Calais is 1-9 against Woodland since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Blue Devils are taking a road trip to take on the Dragons at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Calais was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last game, but they sure didn't let that happen against Shead on Thursday. The Blue Devils' pitcher stepped up to hand the Tigers an 11-0 shutout. Considering the Blue Devils have won eight contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Parker Cole was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

In other batting news, Michael Barnard and Isaac Downing did most of the damage at the plate: Barnard went 1-for-4 with three runs and two RBI, while Downing went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Barnard continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Chayeden Newell also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Woodland can bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 15-3 margin over Shead.

Woodland picked up their first home win, bumping their record up to 2-8. As for Calais, their record now sits at 10-3.

Calais got the 'W' when the teams last played on Friday against Woodland by a conclusive 14-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Blue Devils since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
