Football Game Preview: Shawnee Mission West Vikings vs. Gardner-Edgerton Trailblazers + Official Tickets

Shawnee Mission West hasn't had much luck against Gardner-Edgerton recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Vikings will look to defend their home field against the Trailblazers. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 992 yards in their previous games.

On Thursday, Shawnee Mission West lost to Olathe East on the road by a 41-22 margin.

Shawnee Mission West might have lost, but man, Mason Vonfeldt was a machine: he rushed for 112 yards, and also threw for 225 yards and one touchdown. DeAndre Simms was another key player, rushing for 106 yards on only 12 carries.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gardner-Edgerton). They were the clear victors by a 55-35 margin over Olathe South on Friday. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 36-14.

Shawnee Mission West better keep an eye on Syre Padilla. He was instrumental in Gardner-Edgerton's win, rushing for 351 yards and five scores while picking up 12.5 yards per carry. Those five rushing touchdowns gave Padilla a new career-high.

Gardner-Edgerton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 433 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Gardner-Edgerton's win was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 46.1 points this season. As for Shawnee Mission West, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.

Shawnee Mission West suffered a grim 27-6 defeat to Gardner-Edgerton in their previous meeting back in October of 2021. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Vikings were down 20-0.
