Basketball Game Preview: Sutton Mustangs vs. Wood River Eagles

The Sutton Mustangs will face off against the Wood River Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Sutton is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Centennial: they outscored them in every quarter. The Mustangs walked away with a 45-36 win over the Broncos on Friday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Wood River challenged Ravenna on Friday. The Eagles came out on top against the Bluejays by a score of 36-25. The Eagles haven't had any issues with the Bluejays recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

Sutton better keep an eye on Lainey Paulk. She was instrumental in Wood River's win, putting up 15 points and six boards. That makes it four consecutive games in which Paulk has scored at least a third of the Eagles' points. Another player making a difference was Dre VanWinkle, who posted eight points.

Sutton's win bumped their record up to 9-3. As for Wood River, their victory bumped their record up to 5-6.

Sutton strolled past Wood River when the teams last played back in January of 2025 by a score of 55-36. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Paulk, who went 6-for-15 to rack up 14 points and five steals.
