Basketball Game Preview: Leuzinger Olympians vs. Fillmore Flashes

The Leuzinger Olympians will take on the Fillmore Flashes in a tournament on Friday. Both have had a bumpy ride up to this point with five consecutive losses for Leuzinger and four for Fillmore.

Leuzinger's tournament run continued when they took on Burbank two weeks ago. Leuzinger fell just short of Burbank by a score of 57-54.

Despite the loss, Leuzinger got top-tier performance from Brianna Ike, who went 7 for 16 on her way to 19 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals. Those 19 points gave Ike a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Naijah Nelson, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 10 points.

Meanwhile, Fillmore had to suffer through a 60-19 loss at the hands of Glendale. While losing is never fun, the Flashes can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1030th, while the Nitros are ranked 417th).

Despite the defeat, Fillmore saw an underclassman step up: freshman Hermelinda Ocegueda posted seven points. The team also got some help courtesy of Karissa Espitia, who put up five points.

Leuzinger's loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for Fillmore, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-10.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Leuzinger has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 23 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Fillmore struggles in that department as they've been averaging 40.1 boards.
