Basketball Recap: Sierra Takes a Loss

If Sierra was feeling good fresh off their 75-18 takedown of Riverdale last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Sierra Chieftains took a blow against the Caruthers Blue Raiders on Friday, falling 86-39. The Chieftains have struggled against the Blue Raiders recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

Sierra lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Aleeawa Badoni, who went 6 of 14 on her way to 16 points and three blocks. She is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last nine games she's played. Another player making a difference was Taryn Esajian, who posted nine points.

Even though they lost, Sierra smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in seven consecutive matches.

Sierra's defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 19-7. As for Caruthers, they pushed their record up to 19-5 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.

Sierra and Caruthers should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Sierra (ranked 290th) will meet Liberty (ranked 1044th) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Similarly, Caruthers will take on Wonderful College Prep Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday up 1,258 places (85 vs. 1343).
