Mater Dei and St. John Bosco both win in CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinals setting up 1 vs. 2 showdown.

No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) handed Mission Viejo (Calif.) its first loss of the season, cruising to a 49-24 win to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship for the fourth consecutive year.

2020 Alabama commit Bryce Young threw for 520 yards and seven touchdowns and Kody Epps had another huge night hauling in 10 receptions for 339 yards and five scores. The 3-star wide receiver now has 21 grabs for 507 yards and 10 touchdowns in two playoff games.

No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) won in the other semifinal rolling to a dominant 52-14 win over previously ranked Centennial (Corona, Calif.). DJ Uiagalelei threw for four touchdowns and the defense forced four turnovers. The Braves have now made the section championship game seven consecutive years.

These two played on Oct. 25 and Mater Dei won 38-24. Expect the Nov. 30 rematch to be even closer. This is the fourth straight year these two Southern California powers meet in the championship game. Mater Dei has won the last two while St. John Bosco won in 2016.

There were plenty of upsets over the weekend and that led to seven new teams joining this week's rankings.

Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) went from unranked to No. 19 after beating St. John's (Washington, D.C.) in the WCAC championship 16-14. Sol-Jay Maiava found 5-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett for a go-ahead touchdown for the Cadets with just over a minute left but that left too much time on the clock for the Falcons. Sophomore quarterback Chase Williams found Sy'veon Wilkerson out of the backfield for a 50-yard gain setting up the game-winning 32-yard field goal for Vince Errigo.

Armwood (Seffner, Fla.) knocked off the defending 7A state champs and previously ranked Lakeland (Fla.) 23-10 to advance to the 7A semifinals. The Hawks go from unranked to No. 20 and up next is Edgewater (Orlando) with a spot in the state championship game on the line.

Central (Phenix City, Ala.), Elder (Cincinnati), Archbishop Rummel (Metairie, La.), North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.), and Northwestern (Miami) are the other new teams to join the Top 25.

Mentor (Ohio) moved up a couple spots to No. 11 after beating the defending Division 1 state champs St. Edward (Lakewood) in overtime. The Eagles scored a touchdown on its opening possession in overtime and the Cardinals answered with a two-yard touchdown run from Ian Kipp and instead of kicking an extra point they went for two and the win. Kipp found Luke Floriea and Mentor pulled off the comeback with a 36-35 win to advance to the Ohio Division 1 semifinals.

No. 18 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) won its second consecutive state title beating American Fork (Utah) 49-14 in the 6A state championship game. Cole Hagen had another huge night accounting for 442 yards and four touchdowns.
