Preview: Tehachapi Warriors vs. Arvin Bears
Two dominant guards in Riley Walden and Roxana Fernandez are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Tehachapi Warriors just played last night, but they'll still head out to face the Arvin Bears at 6:30 p.m. on January 23rd. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Tehachapi sitting on 12 straight wins and Arvin on three.
In what's become a running theme this season, Tehachapi gave their fans yet another huge win on Monday. They claimed a resounding 60-24 win over East Bakersfield on the road. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win Tehachapi has posted against East Bakersfield since January 18, 2017.
Tehachapi got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Walden out in front who scored 18 points along with six assists. Another player making a difference was Kennedy Perkins, who scored 13 points along with six steals and four blocks.
Meanwhile, Arvin put the finishing touches on their seventh blowout victory of the season on Friday. They took their match on the road with ease, bagging a 62-18 victory over Mira Monte. Given Arvin's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 570th, while Mira Monte is ranked 1261st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Arvin to victory, but perhaps none more so than Fernandez, who scored 13 points along with seven assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Emily Soto, who scored 12 points.
Tehachapi's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-2. As for Arvin, their win bumped their record up to 12-9.
Tehachapi strolled past Arvin in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 by a score of 58-40. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Arvin's Marie Montes, who scored 12 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. Now that she won't be playing on Tuesday, will it be that much easier for Tehachapi to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
