Basketball Recap: Julia Holmes' Big Game Can't Quite Lead San Dieguito Academy over La Jolla

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact San Dieguito Academy can now relate to. They fell to the La Jolla Vikings 39-35. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Vikings apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2018.

San Dieguito Academy lost on Saturday despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Julia Holmes, who posted four points in addition to eight steals and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Lillian Malewicz, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and ten boards.

Even though they lost, San Dieguito Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in five consecutive contests.

Reagan Bennett was her usual excellent self, en route to 24 points along with seven rebounds and three steals for La Jolla. Bennett has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. AJ Jacoby was another key player, putting up four points and nine boards.

San Dieguito Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 14-9. As for La Jolla, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 14 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-9 record this season.

San Dieguito Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for La Jolla, they will square off against Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 15 games -- so hopefully La Jolla likes a good challenge.
