St. Mary proved they can win big last Saturday (they won by 41) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Niobrara/Verdigre Cougars 52-49. The victory was familiar territory for the Cardinals who have now won 13 contests in a row.

St. Mary's got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Pyper Ickes out in front who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 assists. Another player making a difference was Gracie Williamson, who went 10 for 13 en route to 21 points.

Ickes wasn't the only one working in the assists department: St. Mary's was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Several Cougars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Allison Sucha, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 14 rebounds. Sucha has become a key player for Niobrara/Verdigre: the team is 12-3 when she posts at least ten boards, but 1-3 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Eve Kucera, who posted eight points along with nine rebounds and three steals.

St. Mary's record now sits at 19-1. As for Niobrara/Verdigre, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 13-6 record.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will square off against Boyd County at 6:15 p.m. on February 11th. The timing is sure in St. Mary's favor as the squad sits on 16 straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Boyd County has been banged up by seven consecutive losses on the road. As for Niobrara/Verdigre, they will take on North Central in a tournament on Saturday.
