Football Recap: Frans Steyn's Big Game Can't Quite Lead San Marcos over East Central

San Marcos lost against East Central back in October of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Rattlers fell 28-24 to the Hornets. The Rattlers were up 21-0 in the second quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

San Marcos' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Frans Steyn, who rushed for 94 yards and one TD on only ten carries, and also threw for 254 yards and one touchdown. Another rusher making a difference was Justin Tardy, who rushed for 124 yards and one score on only seven carries.

Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere zero yards per carry. While two picked up at least seven total tackles, Cameron Bundage stood above the rest. He picked up 2.5 sacks and made seven total tackles (4.5 for loss). San Marcos' run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed 4.83 yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 8.17 on average over their last five games.

San Marcos' defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for 6.5 sacks. East Central's QB won't forget Bundage anytime soon given he sacked him 2.5 times.

Ray Gloria was the offensive standout of the matchup as he threw for 101 yards and one touchdown on only five passes, and also punched in one rushing score.

San Marcos' defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-3. As for East Central, their win was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 2-5.

San Marcos didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 27-17 victory against Judson on the 17th. As for East Central, they have also already played their next game, a 28-7 loss against Canyon on the 17th.
