Northwest extended their winning streak to 20 on Thursday, bumping them up to 22-2. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Aurora Huskies 9-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Vikings have posted against the Huskies since September 12, 2023.
Graclyn Simmons was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Libby Loman was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Abby Dinkelman was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Northwest hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least three batters in five consecutive contests.
As for Aurora, their loss dropped their record down to 12-11. They have struggled against Northwest recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
On Aurora's side, Samara Whited was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she tossed 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off five hits.
At the plate, Ashlyn Kottwitz was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Northwest's road trip will continue as they head out to face Crete at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Cardinals' pitching crew has only allowed 2.9 runs per game this season, so the Vikings' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Aurora, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Seward at 1:30 p.m.
