Football Recap: St. Pius X Starts Season with Win at Home

St. Pius X took care of business in their home opener on Saturday. They strolled past the West Mesa Mustangs with points to spare, taking the game 47-29. This was payback for the Sartans, who suffered a 48-29 loss the last time these two teams met.

St. Pius X's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hershul Olloway Jr, who rushed for 176 yards and two TDs on only eight carries, and also picked up 31 receiving yards. Olloway Jr's longest rush was for an incredible 70 yards. St. Pius X also got help from Cayl Cox-Liggins, who showed off his sure hands for 108 receiving yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: St. Pius X was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 297 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.

Despite the loss, West Mesa still got an impressive performance from Victor Aguilar, who rushed for 141 yards and a pair of scores. Another player making a difference was Marcos Ochoa, who picked up 68 receiving yards and one touchdown.

St. Pius X has already played their next matchup, a 34-20 win against Grants on the 29th. As for West Mesa, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 27-21 victory against Mayfield on the 29th.
