Basketball Recap: Shannen Wilson Key Part of a Team Effort in Cowboys Win

Canyon's tournament run continued when they took on Mesa on Friday. The Canyon Cowboys walked away with a 50-43 victory over the Mesa Jackrabbits. The win was all the more spectacular given the Cowboys' disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 255th in California, while the Jackrabbits are ranked 64th in Arizona).

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Canyon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Shannen Wilson, who almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine boards. The match was Wilson's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jasmine Williams, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 boards.

Canyon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games.

Canyon now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Mesa, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season.

Canyon will be taking part in a tournament against Rio Mesa at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. As for Mesa, they will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Highland at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
