Preview: Surprise Valley Hornets vs. Loyalton Grizzlies

The Surprise Valley Hornets will head out on the road to square off against the Loyalton Grizzlies at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Surprise Valley is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.

Last Thursday, Surprise Valley came up short against Tulelake and fell 46-33. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Surprise Valley in their matchups with Tulelake: they've now lost three in a row.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Elizabeth Lopez-Rangel, who scored 13 points. Another player making a difference was Gennasys Fernandez, who scored 12 points.

Meanwhile, things could have been worse for Loyalton, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 55-40 loss to Quincy on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, Loyalton can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 810th, while Quincy is ranked 351st).

Like Surprise Valley, Loyalton lost despite seeing results from several players. Catherine Petterson led the charge by scoring ten points along with two steals. Petterson is crushing the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Mollie Griffin, who scored eight points along with two steals.

Surprise Valley has not been sharp recently as the team has lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season. As for Loyalton, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-9.
