The winter sports season was a good one for La Salle Academy (Providence, R.I.), which moved to No. 1 in the MaxPreps Cup standings.
The Rams won four state championships and finished second in two other sports to zoom past Green Hope (Cary, N.C.) and Haddonfield (N.J.) for the top spot with 1,442 points. La Salle Academy won state titles in boys and girls indoor track, boys ice hockey and girls basketball. It also finished second in girls ice hockey and girls swimming.
The strong winter season moves La Salle Academy over 140 points ahead of Haddonfield (1,302 points), which holds on to the No. 2 spot. The Bulldawgs finished first in boys basketball and took second place in boys and girls swimming.
Green Hope, the No. 1 team during the fall sports season, dropped to No. 4 with 1,227 points. The Falcons won state titles in boys indoor track and boys swimming to give them five total state championships on the school year.
Carmel (Ind.) jumped 38 spots to No. 3 with state titles in boys and girls swimming and a runner-up finish in boys basketball. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) with state titles in girls basketball and boys soccer, moved from No. 11 to No. 5.
The MaxPreps Cup is a compilation of the top high school athletic programs in the nation. Points are awarded for state championships and runner-up finishes as well as for placement in national rankings.
