Softball Game Preview: Callaway Cavaliers vs. Starr's Mill Panthers

The Callaway Cavaliers will head out on the road to challenge the Starr's Mill Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

Callaway headed into their last match having not scored more than two runs for three straight, but Upson-Lee let them put that streak behind them. The Cavaliers' pitcher stepped up to hand the Knights a 15-0 shutout on Monday. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Cavaliers' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Lilah Monteith made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. Monteith was also big at the plate, earning three RBI and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Ryleigh Seymour was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those hits were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Ella Kelly, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.

Callaway hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Starr's Mill hadn't done well against Whitewater recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Panthers blew past the Wildcats 9-1. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by six runs or more this season.

Starr's Mill pushed their record up to 4-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Callaway, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-3.

Callaway suffered a grim 13-5 defeat to Starr's Mill when the teams last played back in September of 2024. Can the Cavaliers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
