Basketball Recap: Mission Bay Comes Up Short

Mission Bay lost against Coronado back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Mission Bay Buccaneers lost to the Coronado Islanders at home by a 48-33 margin. While losing is never fun, the Buccaneers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1134th, while the Islanders are ranked 561st).

Despite the loss, Mission Bay still got an impressive performance from Imani Cosby, who almost dropped a double-double on 23 points and nine rebounds. Cosby continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Lariza Ortega also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Selena Herrera was her usual excellent self, putting up 20 points and three steals for Coronado. That makes it four consecutive games in which Herrera has scored at least a third of Coronado's points. Gabby Fichter was another key player, earning 12 points and three steals.

Mission Bay has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-16 record this season. As for Coronado, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 14-2.

Looking ahead, Mission Bay will venture away from home to take on Lincoln at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Coronado, they will host Canyon Hills at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
