Softball Recap: Columbus Discoverers vs. Norfolk Panthers
Columbus extended their losing streak to three on Saturday, dropping them down to 4-12. They lost 14-7 to the Norfolk Panthers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-7 back in August.
Naomi Robertson made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Alayna Kudron, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
As for Norfolk, they pushed their record up to 11-11 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Considering they have won eight matchups by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
On Norfolk's side, Rory Vrbsky made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). Vrbsky has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Kenzie Zerbie was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Brynn Peterson was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs.
We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Columbus will take on rival Fremont at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Norfolk is set to face off against their familiar foe Lincoln East at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
