Basketball Recap: Mt. Whitney Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Mt. Whitney waltzed into their game on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They walked away with a 43-32 win over the Farmersville Aztecs. Given the Pioneers' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 317th, while the Aztecs are ranked 673rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mt. Whitney's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kaylie Mares, who went 7 of 16 en route to 14 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Mares is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least three every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Dolores Carter, who posted seven points and 15 boards.

Mt. Whitney was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Farmersville's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Haylie Tassey, who had seven points in addition to nine boards and eight steals. Another player making a difference was Janessa Garza, who posted ten points and eight rebounds.

Mt. Whitney pushed their record up to 5-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 27.3 points per game. As for Farmersville, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 4-4.

Mt. Whitney wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 34-23 win against Exeter on the 14th. As for Farmersville, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 35-24 victory against Mira Monte on the 14th.
