Basketball Game Preview: Mesa Verde Mavericks vs. Burbank Titans

The Mesa Verde Mavericks will take on the Burbank Titans in a holiday battle at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Mesa Verde will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.

On Friday, Mesa Verde beat Del Campo 42-29.

Mesa Verde relied on the efforts of Jaiden Alexander, who posted eight points along with eight rebounds and six steals, and Grace Johnson, who shot 45% from the field to rack up 12 points and four steals. Alexander has been hot, having posted eight or more boards the last six times she's played. Dion Carter was another key player, putting up seven points.

Meanwhile, Burbank came up short against Bradshaw Christian on Thursday and fell 45-35.

Mesa Verde will need to focus on slowing down Tommiko Johnson, one of several Burbank players who made an impact when they last played. She almost dropped a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds. That was a full 60% of Burbank's points, marking the third time in a row Johnson has had more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jordan Lewis, who put up five points and 16 boards.

Mesa Verde's win bumped their record up to 7-3. As for Burbank, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Mesa Verde has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 21 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Burbank struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Mesa Verde didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Burbank in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, but they still walked away with a 35-31 victory. Will the Mavericks repeat their success, or do the Titans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
