Recap: Santana Sultans vs. Holtville Vikings
The Santana Sultans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their eighth straight loss. They took a 30-22 hit to the loss column at the hands of Holtville. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Santana of the 49-31 defeat they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2020.
Santana lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jayden Fields, who scored ten points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Fields has scored all season.
Holtville had a senior duo take command as Jasmine Garewal dropped a double-double on 16 points and 15 rebounds and Vanessa Gonzalez scored eight points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Garewal has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 12 times she's played.
Santana has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost nine of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-16 record this season. As for Holtville, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-11.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Santana won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Valhalla at 6:30 p.m. on January 16th. Hopefully Valhalla focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 last Saturday. Holtville won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Palo Verde Valley at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th.
