Lakers dominate Davison 41-0 in Division 1 state championship game to capture first title in school history.
The high school football season in Michigan came to a close over the weekend with championship games in eight divisions at Ford Field in Detroit.
West Bloomfield was among the winners, beating Davison 41-0 in the Division 1 championship game and finishing No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 computer rankings.
That victory, coupled with an 11-1 record and tremendous play this season, makes West Bloomfield the 2020 MaxPreps Champion for the state of Michigan.
University of Michigan-bound running back
Donovan Edwards ran wild in the championship game victory over Davison, piling up 257 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries. The future Wolverines scored on runs of 78, 71 and 16 yards.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Edwards finished the season with nearly 1,300 yards and 20 touchdowns in the pandemic-shortened season.
West Bloomfield, which opened its doors in 1955, had never won a football state championship. The Lakers reached the 2017 Division 1 title game but fell to Clarkston.
Ironically, it was Clarkston who also handed West Bloomfield its only loss of the 2020-21 season. The Lakers took off following that setback, outscoring their next seven opponents 281-27 – including four-straight shutouts during that run.
But things tightened up in the semifinals against Belleville as the champs needed two overtimes to secure a 35-34 win.
Over the past four years, West Bloomfield has emerged as a powerhouse program in Michigan, compiling a 41-9 record with two championship game appearances.
