Baseball Game Preview: Emerson Cavaliers vs. Vernon Vikings

The Emerson Cavaliers will challenge the Vernon Vikings at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Emerson has struggled recently with four defeats in a row, while Vernon will arrive with four straight wins.

Lodi hit Emerson with a six-run fourth inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Cavaliers lost 15-7 to the Rams.

Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Vernon ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out New Providence 2-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Vikings have posted since March 30th.

Vernon got a great performance from Matt Rugel as he pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. What's more, Rugel posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Gavin Bruno, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most doubles he has posted since back in April of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyler Dobrzynski, who went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one RBI.

Vernon's win bumped their record up to 16-6. As for Emerson, their loss dropped their record down to 6-18-1.
