Football Game Preview: Goddard Lions vs. South Cougars

The Goddard Lions will face off against the South Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. South took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Goddard, who comes in off a win.

It was a proper cat-fight when Goddard duked it out with Andover Central on Friday. The Lions walked away with a 31-23 victory over the Jaguars. The Lions haven't had any issues with the Jaguars recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Erik Olivas and Jaxson Green. Olivas had a great game and rushed for 212 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 10.6 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Green was balling out in the loss, rushing for 119 yards and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, South was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss dating back to last season. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 29-23 heartbreaker at the hands of Valley Center. The Cougars gained 77 more yards on the day, but it was the Hornets that made the best use of them.

Despite the defeat, South saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Izrael Telles threw for 215 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 72% of his passes.

South's loss dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Goddard, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

Everything came up roses for Goddard against South in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 61-10 victory. Will the Lions repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
