Basketball Recap: Mission Viejo Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Mission Viejo had lost ten straight headed into Saturday's match, but Sofia Gozzo didn't let it get to 11. The Mission Viejo Diablos sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 34-31 win over the Newport Harbor Sailors on Saturday thanks in part to Gozzo, who went 6 for 13 on her way to 16 points and eight steals. That's the most points she has posted since back in January of 2024.

Another player making a difference was Savanna Whitesides, who posted six points and eight rebounds. She is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played.

Mission Viejo's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-16. As for Newport Harbor, they dropped their record down to 8-16 with the loss, which was their sixth straight at home.

Mission Viejo is taking a road trip to challenge Capistrano Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mission Viejo is facing Capistrano Valley at the right time seeing as Capistrano Valley is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. Newport Harbor has already played their next game (against Fountain Valley), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
