High school football rankings: Massillon Washington rises in MaxPreps Top 25 after win over St. John's

Washington (Massillon, Ohio) added another quality win to its resume with a 28-7 victory over St. John's (Washington, D.C.). The Tigers have won 10 in a row against out-of-state competition as they improved to 7-0 on the season. The victory helped them improve five spots in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings to No. 16.

Senior quarterback DaOne Owens, who missed the previous week's 41-7 win over Middletown (Del.), was ruled eligible by the OHSAA hours before the kickoff against St. John's. The three-star prospect accounted for two touchdowns in the win over the Cadets. The Tigers have held four of seven opponents to 10 points or fewer this season and outscored their foes 274-61.

No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) rolled past Servite (Anaheim) 49-0 in its Trinity League opener. Senior quarterback Elijah Brown completed 21 of 26 passes for 303 yards and five touchdowns. The Monarchs scored a touchdown on all seven drives and still haven't trailed at any point this season. Up next for the top-ranked team in the country is JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) before a huge showdown at No. 9 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) on Oct. 13.

Bosco bounced back in a big way after their first loss of the season with a 42-7 win against Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita). Cameron Jones and Chauncey Sylvester led the way on the ground combining for four scores as Class of 2026 standout Dutch Horisk piled up four sacks on defense. The defending MaxPreps National Champs improved to 5-1 and host Servite on Friday.

Willie Gaston has done a tremendous job in his first year as head coach for No. 7 North Shore (Houston). The Mustangs are 5-0 and handed King (Houston) its first loss of the season, 42-6. Junior quarterback Kaleb Bailey is back under center after missing the final 11 games of his sophomore year with a knee injury. He led the Mustangs to a 6A Division 1 state title as a freshman and has been playing at a high level this season, helping the Texas powerhouse outscore its opponents 227-39.
