Basketball Recap: Lucca Rubin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Brawley over Vincent Memorial

Brawley lost against Vincent Memorial back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Brawley Wildcats took a 42-25 bruising from the Vincent Memorial Scots. While losing is never fun, the Wildcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 796th, while the Scots are ranked 303rd).

Several Wildcats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Lucca Rubin, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 18 rebounds. Bre Montano was another key player, putting up seven points and seven rebounds.

Vincent Memorial's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Dafne Borunda led the charge by posting 17 points along with five assists and five steals. Borunda is becoming a predictor of Vincent Memorial's success: when she posts at least five steals the team is undefeated (and 3-4 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Paola Longoria, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten boards.

Brawley has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-10 record this season. As for Vincent Memorial, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-4.

Brawley didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 43-40 defeat against Palo Verde Valley on the 10th. As for Vincent Memorial, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, an 80-14 victory against Southwest EC on the 10th.
